In 1935 the Federal Migratory Wildlife Refuge was established. It was changed to Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge in 1978. It is now called Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is located on Hwy 159 a few miles south of Mound City.
